A brief introduction to Hecla Island, Manitoba

Protruding into the vast waters of Lake Winnipeg, one of the world’s largest lakes, Hecla Island contains some of Manitoba’s most unique culture, wildlife and scenery.

Located north of Winnipeg on the west side of Lake Winnipeg, Hecla Island forms part of Hecla/Grinstone Provincial Park. Biodiversity abounds in this relatively unknown part of Canada. Go there for sandy beaches, marshes, cliffs, hiking, biking, sailing, golf, wildlife and Icelandic (yes, Icelandic) culture.

Activities

• Hecla Island boasts over 75 km of hiking and biking trails. The first place you see as you drive across the manmade causeway is Grassy Narrows Marsh, home to over 25 km of trails and boardwalks. This is also one of the best places on the island to spot moose. The 19 km Black Wolf Trail takes you through some of Hecla Island’s most diverse and unspoiled areas. The West Quarry Trail leads to a wildlife watching hut over a lagoon, while the Lighthouse Trail is a short walk to superb views of nearby Black Island and, of course, a lighthouse.
• In winter these trails make great cross country skiing and snowshoeing routes. 
• Snowmobiles are able to criss-cross the frozen lake, where you can also go ice fishing.
• A self-guided trail talks visitors through Hecla Village’s unique Icelandic past.
• The island’s 18-hole golf course is one of Manitoba’s best.
• Boat docks, kayaks, boat hire and tours are available from Gull Harbour Marina.
  
• Tennis courts are available near Gull Harbour Point. Fishing is another popular activity.
